NorthScale Membase Server Beta 3 is Here!

I am excited to announce that NorthScale Membase Server 1.6 Beta3 is now available and ready for download.

This beta release adds a lot of new functionality and reflects most of what you’ll find in the final product. Highlights include:

  • Windows support
  • Multi-tenancy – allows multiple buckets on a single cluster including bucket quotas
  • “Cluster Overview” as a new monitoring dashboard
  • And lots of small improvements and bug fixes, of course!

Let’s take a look at these features in a bit more detail:

Windows support is by far one of the most frequently requested features, and we are very pleased to offer it with this beta release. Beta3 provides 32-bit Windows support, with 64-bit support on the way (Note: The 32bit binary runs just fine on Windows 64-bit but is subject to the 32-bit memory limits). The Windows version provides the same feature set as our Linux version. Read more »

NorthScale Selected to Present at GigaOM’s LaunchPad

We just got word from GigaOM that they’ve chosen NorthScale as one of 11 companies to present at this year’s LaunchPad (during the Structure 2010 conference in San Francisco). We are excited to take the stage on June 23 to unveil the next wave of our elastic data technology and noSQL strategy. 30 days and counting…

Simply Transformational

It’s great to be posting my first blog as NorthScale’s new chief executive. This is a unique company with a unique opportunity to drive the incredible transformation taking place in the data management space. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.

So, what attracted me to NorthScale? And for that matter, why did our investors just pour $10 million into our company coffers? In a word: simplicity. The simplicity of NorthScale’s technology, the simplicity of our market strategy, and our commitment to make it as simple as possible for customers to get from where they are today to where this new wave of technology transformation leads.

Drilling down a bit, there are a number of things about NorthScale that get me excited: Read more »

NorthScale at Zynga

We launched NorthScale with our story on working with Zynga.  Software geeks out there may have wanted to know more about how Zynga and NorthScale collaborated on to build membase using the engine extension APIs available through memcached’s engine branch (hosted in Trond’s github repo), planned for addition to the 1.6.x release of memcached.

At the MySQL Conference 2010 we were able to give some background and a peek into what was set up for Zynga’s FarmVille and Café World, and where we’re going with membase.  They don’t have the awesome commentary from Dustin or I, but slides are available.

memcached client and server source from NorthScale

I guess most people don’t know this, but I’m the only member of the technical team in NorthScale located in Europe. I live just outside Trondheim in Norway, so it’s pretty far from everything.

So why did I join NorthScale? A lot of my friends in Trondheim have been asking me that question. To them it sounds strange that I want to work from home for a company located 9 timezones away. I’ve known Dustin Sallings and Steve Yen a couple of years through their work on memcached in the community, and I was excited to hear what they where up to. I’ve worked closely with Matt Ingenthron and Eric Lambert from my time in Sun, so I knew that they already had a talented team. Read more »

NorthScale and Open Source contributions

Though a number of core developers in the memcached project know, the casual memcached user may not be aware that over the last few months NorthScale released a bevy of memcached client and server contributions. NorthScale is continuing to work with the other project contributors and leaders to get these contributions in shape for inclusion into the various core projects. Hello, World.

After many months of hard work running up to our launch, writing this blog entry is the very last item on my pre-launch to-do list. We just walked out of our “go/no-go” meeting on the software and we’re ready to roll. It’s hard to believe we’re finally here. Read more »

The Memcached Way

One terrific part of the NorthScale startup adventure has been that we’ve been lucky to have so many great interactions with the memcached community — including folks who’ve used memcached to power some of the largest and most popular web applications and sites on the planet. It seems appropriate as we launch NorthScale to take a moment to pull together a few war stories and lessons learned to date, and roll them up into a larger pattern that I’d like to call “The Memcached Way.” Read more »
